We have now added Vaisala lightning detection equipment to the range of Vaisala products we offer in the UK. This is in addition to Vaisala's surface weather products which we have distributed in the UK for the last 5 years.
The Vaisala lightning detection system comprises the TSS928 thunderstorm sensor and EFM550 thunderstorm electric field mill plus associated software.
The TSS928 thunderstorm sensor provides critical local lightning information for meteorological applications and threat data in order to facilitate advance warnings, initiate safety procedures and isolate equipment with full confidence. The TSS928 detects optical, magnetic and electrostatic pulses from lightning events with zero false alarms. It also detects cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning within 30 nautical miles (56km) plus cloud-to ground- lightning classified into 3 range intervals - 0-5, 5-10 and 10-30 nautical miles plus cloud-to-ground lightning classified into directions N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W and NW. The TSS928 can also be used to integrate lightning reports with automated weather observation reports such as METAR.
The EFM550 thunderstorm electric field mill integrates with Vaisala local area real-time lightning systems such as the TSS928 to monitor the development and dissipation of overhead lightning threats by measuring the local atmospheric electric field mill. It gives advance warning of an overhead lightning threat with minimal false alarms and combines exceptional reliability with low maintenance.
